Breitling History

Leon Breitling is one of the first, and perhaps even the first creator of the first wrist chronograph (1914).
His son and grandson decided to retain traditions and expanded the purpose of their predecessor’s invention, focusing on aircraft watches manufacture in the 30-ies.

Audemars Piguet is actively involved in the environment protection programs, particularly forests.
To do this, in 1992 they established a special Audemars Piguet Time for the Trees fund, which presentation was timed to the twentieth anniversary of Royal Oak model.
Audemars Piguet is also known for their participation in various sporting events sponsorship: since 1985, the brand is supporting sailing sport development.
Now the range of their sporting tastes expanded to include golf and football.


1884 – Leon Breitling opens the first shop in Saint-Imier and starts production of pocket chronographs complex models.

1892 – The workshop moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds.

1915 – Gaston Breitling creates a wrist chronograph with central minute hand and a 30 minutes stopwatch.

1923 – The company obtains a patent for chronological button, independent of the crown.

1926 – Patent for the counter with 1 / 10 second graduations.

1933 – Breitling gets a patent for a wrist chronograph with two buttons, one of which had the functions of start and stop (including those consistent for time summation), and the second – a function of “zero” counter: so the modern chronograph appeared.

1936 – On-board Breitling chronographs used for more than 30 air companies.

1942 – Chronomat model with built-in slide rule, which allows for mathematical calculations and time measurements during sporting events.

1952 – Navitimer – Aviation Chronograph, very convenient for measuring speed and fuel consumption.

1958 – Superocean, equipped with a watertight guarantee at great depths.

1962 – Cosmonaute – modification of Navitimer model with a 24-hour face, designed specifically for use in space. Astronaut Scott Carpenter enjoys this model.

1966 – The first Breitling chronograph with a square case appears.

1968 – Electrosplit model – sports stopwatch with digital face, equipped with two time measuring systems and results memory function.

1969 – Basel presents a new automatic chronograph.

It features an innovative 11-gauge and is the first chronograph with a modular design.
Together with the El Primero from Zenith (which is an integrated caliber), the mechanism initiated the era of modern automatic chronographs.

1971 – Unitime chronograph shows different time zones simultaneously.

1979 – An Agreement between Ernest Schneider and Willy Breitling provides the further company’s existence, which is currently managed by Theodore Schneider.

1979/1983 – Navitimer chronographs are equipped with a quartz movement, GMT. function 1984 – Chronomat model carries overloading up to 20 atmospheres, is chosen by an Italian national team of aerial acrobatics.

1986 – Swiss Breitling watches can withstand immersion to a depth of 1000 meters and are equipped with a special valve for helium release.

1987 – Premiere of Emergency model, equipped with a radio antenna, able to give the signal of distress.

1989 – Chronomat Yachting model is equopped with a regatta counter.

1990 – Globe Trotter Model allows changing time zones with a button.

1992 – Navitimer is available in smaller versions and with automatic mechanism.

The second half of the 90ies – the development of Emergency model is finished;
in 1997, the model saved lives of 13 passengers from Mata-Rangi ferry.
The company continues manufacture of popular chronographs, such as automatic Spatiographe with digital visualization of chronological minutes and a scuba diving watch; they include a famous Colt Superocean model, waterproof to 1000 meters.

1997 – One of the new models is represented by Montbrillant – a peak of perpetual calendar chronographs manufacture, and Premier model represents a swiss watch, popular in the 30’s.
The world premiere of Twinsixty model with simultaneous second readings on two counters.

1998 – New Montbrillant Eclipse model, a chronograph with lunar phases visualization – the last representative of a collection devoted to the first factory manufacturing House of Grenchen chronographs.
Colt Superocean turns into Professional model, waterproof to a depth of 1500 meters and having a mat case in a military style.
Two new chronographs: Chronoracer with electric mechanism and Colt Chrono Ocean with a quartz movement.
The best watch-tool award is given to B-One quartz model, designed specifically for pilots.

1999 – Breitling company participates in the first nonstop balloon flight around the world.
2000 – The company purchases Kelek – a machinery and complex parts factory.
Since then, Breitling quality of design and development of hand-wound mechanisms grew even higher.
All chronograph hand-wound movements receive a certificate of timepieces.

2001 – The latest models are presented by Navitimer Olympus and Montbrillant Datora; Heritage, Shadow and Cosmonaute chronometers are equipped with flyback function;
Hercules has an extra central minute hand. Avenger becomes an automatic chronometer with 44-millimeter titanium case; Avenger Ml (its quartz version) is the only stop watch in the world with a guarantee for operation to a depth of 1000 meters;
Headwind – an automatic timer that shows date, is waterproof to a depth of 500 meters.
Breitling SuperQuartz chronometer with quartz movement ensures accuracy by providing high mechanical error of 15 seconds per year.
2002 – a 50-year anniversary of Navitimer model is marked with a special series with a traditional collection emblem – two stylized aircrafts – on faces.
Professional models are presented by Avenger Seawolf diving watch, water resistant up to 3000 m.
The company produces the remakes of past years: Colt Superocean 2002 with polished and rounded case increased in size; Crosswind Racing in steel case and very visible marks; satin Hercules and Longitude; Chronomat Bluebird with a larger case and blue face, Avenger Ml quartz chronograph, waterproof to 1000 meters, is equipped with new faces.
2003 – a century after Wright brothers’ flight, Breitling company produces Flyback Montbrillant 1903 chronometer (100 copies in gold cases in three colors), its design is styled in the 20’s, and the “core” is presented by a high frequency chronometric mechanism with automatic winding.
As a result of Breitling and Bentley Motors partnership, they issue two chronographs, close to automotive design in their aesthetics.
Being a Bentley team official sponsor in the 24-hour competitions in Mansa, Breitling Company released a timepiece a la Continental GT style (they also developed a dashboard design for them) with a unique 24-hour indicator.
By a quarter-century Breitling Caliber 11 anniversary (the first modular chronological movement), the company released Navitimer Chrono-Matic: 1000 copies in steel cases, 100 – yellow gold.
Other novelties include Crosswind Special in Limited Edition and two Aeromarine chronometers: Super Avenger and Superocean.
2004 – 20 years after its debut, Chronomat is offered in Evolution version.
Navitimer family welcomes a new GMT chronograph, enclosed in a 46-millimeter case; released in a limited series of 200 copies.
Cockpit is offered as an automatic chronograph and Lady version (quartz).
Colt range includes a model with GMT function and professional underwater watch, water resistant up to 1500 meters.
In partnership with Bentley Motors, the company creates Day-Date Bentley GT chronograph and a chronograph with large date indicator, named after Arnage Limousines engine with a volume of 6.75 liters.

Bentley 6.75 chronograph is named after car engine with the volume of 6,75 l, which is installed on luxury Arnage limousines. Bentley 6.75 model with the date pointer in the form of a large double window is made in two standard versions – in cases of steel / yellow gold – and two collectible series of limited edition: 100 copies in pink gold and 50 pieces – in white. All models are equipped with certified COSC chronometer mechanism.
